SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A suspect in the Sacramento hit-and-run involving a mother and baby was arrested on April 22, CHP officials announced Monday.
Joel Alonzo was arrested on four charges in relation to a hit-and-run in unincorporated Sacramento County two months prior. Surveillance video captured a Honda Odyssey striking a mother pushing her infant in a stroller at the intersection of Lucchesi Drive and Harney Way. As a result of the collision, the mother fell to the ground and the infant was thrown into the street, while the driver of the Honda fled the scene without checking on either party.
On February 9, with the help of a public tip, the abandoned Honda was later found in the 9800 block of Dino Drive in Elk Grove and was determined to have been stolen and driven by Alonzo, authorities say. A warrant was issued for his arrest shortly after the car was discovered.
On April 22, a Sheriff’s Deputy located Alonzo at a homeless encampment under a bridge at French Road and German Drive in unincorporated Sacramento County. Alonzo was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail before being arraigned Monday in the Sacramento Superior Court for Felony Hit and Run, Vehicle Theft, Receiving Stolen Property, and Violation of Probation.
