INDIANAPOLIS — Eight people were killed at a FedEx ground facility in Indianapolis by a male shooter who has killed himself, police said.
Authorities identified the shooter as 19-year-old Brandon Scott Hole, a man who had a previous interaction with the FBI after police were called to his home.
Hole’s mother had expressed concern that the young man planned to commit “suicide by cop” in 2020. Authorities admitted the man to a hospital and confiscated his pump-action shotgun. The weapon was never returned.
Gunfire initially erupted at the facility in the 8900 block of Mirabel Road during the night shift late on Thursday. A police spokesperson, Genae Cook, said that multiple other victims were injured and transported to hospitals. One was hospitalized with critical injuries, she added.
Cook said that police were initially dispatched to reports of shots fired at the facility shortly after 11 p.m. before observing a scene with an active shooter. Authorities confirmed that the gunman later committed suicide.
A FedEx company policy prohibiting phones from being accessed while working may have caused a delay from employees seeking emergency assistance. Family members of employees later confirmed that the Indianapolis facility enforced the rule.
A spokesperson for FedEx confirmed to ethanb822.com that the company was monitoring the situation closely and planned to cooperate with authorities.
“Our focus at this time is on the safety and well-being of our team members and cooperating with investigators.” the spokesperson said.
A witness who worked at the facility told WRTV he observed a man shooting while on break.
“We heard two loud metal clangs at first. They didn’t sound like gunshots at first.” the man said. “More shots went off, somebody went behind their car to the trunk and got another gun, then I saw one body on the floor.”
The names of the victims, half of whom were Sikh, were confirmed by police on Friday.
