WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — West Sacramento Police are searching for a man wanted in connection to an infant found dead in a motel room on Monday.
Officers were dispatched to a welfare check at Silvey’s Motel in the 1000 block of West Capitol Avenue around 12:00 P.M. Department officials say they found the 1-year-old child dead from traumatic injuries.
Police say a homicide warrant has been obtained for Derrick Woods, a man in his early 40s. He was last seen running from the area at the time of the incident. Woods is described as a 5’7″ 170 lb. Black man with black hair and brown eyes.
“He’s considered wanted at this point in association with a violent felony and should be considered dangerous. So, do not approach him, do not make contact with him, just contact the police and allow us to go out and make that contact,” Sergeant Stefan Iwanicki said.
“This is absolutely a traumatic event for anybody involved, especially family members of the deceased child,” Iwanicki added
Police are concerned that Woods has connections out-of-state and may be planning to flee. Woods is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. West Sacramento Police encourage information regarding the suspect to be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
West Sacramento mayor Martha Guerrero released a statement on the infant’s death:
“I was made aware of a horrific crime resulting in the death of an innocent baby. I am both angry and heartbroken for the surviving family grieving such an unimaginable loss. I will work diligently with our local law enforcement to track down the suspects and bring them to justice,” she wrote.
The child’s identity has not been released.
